June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Elder financial exploitation is the fastest-growing form of elder abuse. It occurs when someone illegally or improperly uses an older adult's money, property, or assets for their own benefit.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by:
- Never sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers
- Reviewing bank accounts and credit reports regularly
- Taking time before making financial decisions
- Working with trusted financial professionals
- Reporting suspicious activity immediately
If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts. Scammers can be persuasive, but protecting your financial independence starts with staying informed.
If you believe you've been a victim of financial exploitation:
- Contact your bank
- Report it to local law enforcement
- File a report at IC3.gov
